Once upon a time, there was a girl Martina. She happened to be my neighbour, my occasional assistant and even baby sitter for our 2 year old son and also Czech just like me. One day she told me that she would like to try to do a shoot. We didn’t shoot together right away until now. I had a project in mind and thought she would be perfect for it. Two weeks ago, we got together first time just to have some fun with water splashes. Oh man, I made her work really hard….lol… she had to do few jumps here and there so I am sure the next day, she felt the muscles. Here are samples from our first shoot…..

The way I got to know her from our shoot, I got a clear idea what I want to do with her next. I called one of the amazing makeup aritsts I work with Cristina DeSaoJose to come help me to create her makeup and hair. I got some wardrobe together which I thought would just look stunning on her. Martina came up with this really cute green dress which turned out amazing in photos. Anyways…I better stop writing and just show the photos…..:

What is next for Martina? She is going to see some modeling agencies in Toronto because I know she will make it… and we will all see her around…. Martina, best of luck, it was a pleasure working with you… we’ll work together soon again….:)

Let me introduce you this very colorful fashion photoshoot with Josie Lee. Whenever Josie comes to my studio she brings always something very unique to wear. This time, she brought beautiful dresses which inspired me to do something dreamy, with a touch of paintings.

I have posted this post on my official website at www.zdenkadarula.com and I am also posting it here… as many glamour and boudoir shoots are booked by some women which are planning on entering modeling industry…. here it is:

Today, I was very excited to hear that my friend Jana which I recently photographed, is going to meet 2 known Toronto modeling agencies which expressed their interest in her. She had ton of questions for me…  I started thinking about all the other girls and women I sent to Toronto agencies as well and helped them kick off their modeling journey… All this made me sit down and write this very long “I want to be a model guide” which will hopefully benefit to some women and parents of young girls which would like to start but simply don’t know what to do about that. I did receive many emails in past and in present from my past clients or people asking me for help.

Why are they asking me? Well, I used to work as a model 16 years (currently taking a break since I am Mom of 2  young children) and I am planning on returning to it once my both kids attend school full time. Yes, there is no age limit to modeling… you heard me right. I never forget my acting agent’s words: “I cannot wait for the day you hit 40, you will then finally start making money for me”! I did acting for few years as well which was absolutely fun and loved it! I worked briefly as a modeling agent in MTSC Toronto… which I didn’t like that much….:) (you will read why later on) and I am successfully working as a photographer past 8 years which is my true passion. My work has been published all over the world… as a model and photographer.

Just few shots from my modeling career.: (Runway work, American Playboy Cover and Sears Lingerie Catalogue)

Let’s get rolling… here is the guide. Some of you might agree with me, some of you not… take whatever you need from it and all I will say is “break a leg”….:) Oh yeah, and English is my second language so please ignore my grammar skills. I am doing my best I can.

Here are some magazine covers I photographed:

I WANT TO BE A MODEL GUIDE:

- I want to do modeling but I don’t have a portfolio. What to do?:  You can attend one of the agencies’ open calls which generally happens on Tuesday or Wednesday. (each agency is different, just call them and ask when it is) You don’t need to bring anything…just show up… If you have that super stunning look which is right now in demand, agency will send you to their own photographer to do what is called “model testing”.

OR you can try different route. Modeling is exactly the same thing as having your own business. The way you present yourself will reflect on you. Better way starting is getting at lest one good headshot and one good photo of your full body for your portfolio. You really don’t need many photos to start with.  I always suggest to shoot at least 2 looks. If you are newbie which never posed in front of the camera, you will most likely be very stiff and a bit nervous. First look will probably be little bit stiff, second look will be more relaxed… at least I am seeing this from taking photos of various people which never did modeling before.

What to wear in your photos? I get this question all the time when someone is booking modeling portfolio session with me. One look should be very simple where agents clearly see your body type. Something like black leggings and top, or black silhouette dress will do. Second one can be either more casual or more classy.  It all depends on what type of modeling you want to do. Are you young between 16 and 19 and want to do high fashion? Are you commercial type of person? Are you fitness model? Are you lingerie, swimwear model? To get a closer look at what should be warn during photo session take a look at some Toronto modeling agencies’ websites, browse their modeling portfolios and study what those models are wearing.  Stay with simple tones, no busy pattern or loud colors. You should be seen first… then the outfit. The same thing applies to makeup. Ask for simple natural makeup. Agents want to see how you look like and how camera reads you…… not how your makeup looks like and guessing how you really look like behind all that makeup of yours.  Once you have your test images in your hands,  you are ready to go find an appropriate agent for you.

If you have the right type of images in your portfolio, your chances that you sign with a good agency right away will increase. When I came to Canada at 18 years of age, I brought my modeling portfolio from Europe. I went to see Elite where I met Elmer Olsen. He told me straight up that with that kind of portfolio I won’t get any work and he wasn’t interested in signing me. Well… I’ve waited few years, worked with different agencies and came back to Elmer Olsen. After seeing my new well established portfolio with North American feel, he signed me up in seconds. I was smiling in the elevator on the way to the car. He didn’t remember me… but I did remember the moment I’ve met him first time….:) It is just matter of time. You have to build your portfolio, start somewhere small and then build up as you go. Just like any business.

- Which agency should I go with?: Here is a very interesting question. Many parents email me confused, they don’t know where to sign up their teens. It is not about finding an agency with good or bad reputation. It is about finding an agency which will work for your type and get you work. I’ve met many models telling me all proudly: “I am with such and such agency”… OK… and how many jobs did you get from them this year? “Actually, only 1 job this year and I had 3 auditions in total” and it was already November. You can try to be in a “top and biggest” agency in town but if you are just a name on the list, not getting work, is it worth it? I have been represented by many agencies in my modeling years… to name a few: Elmer Olsen, Next, Giovanni, Metropolitan in Paris (France) and small agency Broadbelt and Fonte. Do you know which one was the best one? Small agency Broadbelt and Fonte in Toronto. I was working 5 days a week steady. They had roughly 60 models at the time, making sure they all worked. That was the best agency for me. I wasn’t a high fashion type model. I am a commercial type. I did mostly lingerie and swimsuit modeling back then.

- Which agency is right for you then? Go to see few agencies and get opinions from them. Listen to what they have to say. If they say no, ask them: “Which agency do you recommend me? What type of modeling you think I should do? Do I need to improve anything or change anything in my look…. (hair color, cut as an example).” Once you find an agency which will want to sign you, talk to the agent some more. Is the agent honest, are you feeling he/she is sincere… not all promises type of thing? I personally like an agent which tells me good things and also tells me bad things without any hesitation. Such as “Warren Beatty from AAB Talent” told me: “Do you know what is a negative thing about you?” I said… “my accent?” He said: “I am glad you know it. Your accent will limit you in some acting roles.” Until this day, I think he was the best acting agent for me. Once I return to acting, I will knock on his agency’s door hoping to take me back….:) I don’t like agents which do too much of a sweet talk. Those never gave me work.

Don’t forget that interview works both ways.  You are interviewing a modeling agent trying to find the right one for you and they are doing the same thing with you. They are in it to make money. They want people which have the right look for them, are reliable, sincere, don’t have an attitude, and will represent them well. I’ve had a pleasure to work as a modeling agent. I’ve met some awesome models.  I’ve met some male models which drove me nuts with their attitudes. They thought they are superstars and treated me like I was a slave. Guess what? I didn’t book them again.  In fact, I’ve placed their photos under the table so I didn’t even have to look at them again. Oh boy,  was I running away from working as modeling agent. It is not easy to deal with some models.

Bottom line, come for an interview with little or no makeup, wear something tight so agents can see your body. Not too sexy though, they are not interested in seeing your underwear through too short of a skirt. Something classy, simple and tight to show waist line and body shape. Bring portfolio, be yourself, be healthy confident and listen to what he/she has to say.

Again, this guide is based on my life experiences. It is not meant to be as something you have to do… read it… if you feel there is something which might help you… I am glad I could help. I can talk and talk about modeling… I could write a book about it…. and my modeling years… BUT I would need someone to help me with that….:) again, here comes my English as a second language thing excuse.

As we were going through Jana’s wardrobe, she pulled out a beg. I knew immediately there is something special in there as I could sense it from her face. She pulled out yellow top and long skirt with fall leaves… This was her Mom’s outfit she used to wear. Jana wished to wear it at some of the photos in memory of her loving Mom. Of course I said yes. I didn’t hesitated even for a second. If someone asks you such a thing, it is a privilege to do that for them. I knew I have to shoot this set outdoors, connecting with nature… , quiet and calm. Cristina (makeup artist) and I could feel the sadness as we photographed Jana in the woods.

This last set will take us back to fashion, crazy, funny, edgy.. and I don’t know what else. Jana came to me and explained me that she has SYNESTHESIA. What is it?

Synesthesia is a condition in which one sense (for example, hearing) is simultaneously perceived as if by one or more additional senses such as sight. Another form of synesthesia joins objects such as letters, shapes, numbers or people’s names with a sensory perception such as smell, color or flavor.

Pretty simply explained, Jana sees numbers, names, alphabet and other things all in different colors. Let’s look at her Days of the week: Monday (white), Tuesday (blue), Wednesday (yellow), Thursday (brown), Friday (white to light blue grey), Saturday (blue) and Sunday (yellow). Pretty interesting isn’t it?

I wanted to have fun with it so we picked all kinds of outfits with different colors, including a bright pink wig. I admit this set was a challenge for me as well, as I didn’t want it to look tacky… I wanted to come up with fashion and edgy style…. well, you be the judge if we got that right…:)

Lastly…. I have to share a letter I just received from Jana…. I cannot say enough thank you for such a kind words… thank you again. It has been a real pleasure to photograph you….:)

“Dear Zdenka…
I’m keep writing and deleting. I am looking for the right words. Hopefully I will be able to find those perfect ones to describe my thoughts. Last few years has been for me very challenging. I have never cared about myself as much as last couple of months. I think, you motivated me the most. With your words, your life, your experience. I adore your determination and priorities, your lust to perfection. I have never thought about myself. My whole adulthood was about to help other people. Any kind of way. Possible or impossible, many times against the concrete wall. But only for a reason to run away from myself. I’m the person who don’t quite cope with balance. Extreme is what I love. However, I felt satisfied in my heart, I wasn’t satisfied with my own “I”
As a woman. I have never been spoiled woman. I have never heard the words from man who would adore my body. Or had admirer who would go crazy for me. I know, sounds kind of silly, but we are women and we want to be treated like that, each of us. I learned to be alone with my truly dream to be important for someone, or bring a joy for eyes as a lady Marylin Monroe on the poster hanged in kids room, used to for my brother when he was in his youth age:). I dreamed that people would like me as I was but truly when you have 130 kilos, it’s pretty damn hard. People judge, criticise… No chance for know the heart without diamond gate.
Today, I’m extremely grateful to you Zdenka, in believing me, for giving me a chance to open my heart, which is full of fun, all kinds of desires and unbelievable lust to act in front of camera. You may catch each moment of my thoughts, happiness or sadness, false or honesty, you may catch it and stay there for ever. You gave me a chance to find my woman “I”.
I truly want to continue and express myself to the extreme. But for some reason I wasn’t able to get there. These moments, hours with you, stay in my heart with me as the most treasured memories of my life.
Hugs,
Your friend Janu”

First two sets of this complete makeover photo shoot with Jana Canda are “Classy in Black” and “Pinup Style”. I wanted to create each set very different. I wanted to show how big changes we can do.

I get many emails from women worrying about their wardrobe selection and about their figures in general. What I always say…. “if you are not sure, pack as many outfits you have at home and we will help you selecting the best ones”. One of the best and classic choices for upscale look is all in black… tight pants, nice shirt and wide belt which will help you achieve really slim waist in photos.  Ad some volume to your hair and sexy smoky eyes to finish this look.  I know Jana quite well and I know her style. She is very happy person, loves colors and is not afraid to mix it all up. I don’t ever remember her wearing something like this…. and it suits her well.

I always wanted to photograph pinup style.  When I mentioned it to Jana she was a game right away. She actually went to Toronto and started shopping for some outfits. She came up with this wonderful skirt, top and shoes… I added a corset and voila! Here is fun, tease and sexy pinup style. Here I discovered that Jana has huge acting talent. She was giving me such an amazing expressions… any photographer would feel extremely happy with a model like that. I think she was leading half of the shoot herself. Even really experienced models have sometimes big trouble to completely let go… The best results are achieved when you completely let go of your fear, have fun, enjoy every single moment and just go with it.
